Cycling Gear

Reviews of helmets, shoes, lights, bags, clothing, and accessories. Buying gear well means matching to your discipline (commuter vs. mountain vs. road) and use frequency.

Priority order for new riders:

  1. Helmet. The one piece of gear that’s non-negotiable. Budget for $40–$80 for a quality entry-level helmet.
  2. Lights. Required for night riding in most U.S. states; recommended at all hours as daytime running lights.
  3. Shoes (clipless pedals). Upgrade noticeable past a few miles per ride. Optional for casual riders, expected past about 5 hours/week.
  4. Everything else. Comfort and convenience improvements.
