Road Bikes

Road bike geometry splits four ways: endurance/sportive (relaxed position, longer wheelbase, designed for distance comfort), race (aggressive position, short wheelbase, designed for speed and responsiveness), gravel/all-road (wider tire clearance, slightly relaxed geometry, drop bars), and fixie/single-speed (urban commuter, minimal drivetrain). Endurance is the right starting point for most riders.
What to look for under $700:

Shimano Claris or better. Claris is the entry road groupset; below that (Tourney) the shifters and front derailleur won’t hold tune.
Aluminum frame with carbon fork. Steel road bikes exist but add weight; full carbon at this price point is suspect.
Tire clearance for 28mm or wider. Older “race” road bikes top out at 25mm — uncomfortable on rough pavement.
