Folding Bikes

Folding bikes solve a specific problem: combining bike with transit (subway, bus, RV) or storing in tight spaces (apartment, office, boat). Most folding bikes sold today are electric (folding e-bikes); pure mechanical folders have become a smaller niche dominated by Brompton at the premium end and budget brands at the entry level.
What matters for folding bikes:

Folded dimensions, not weight. A 28-lb bike that folds to 20″×30″×12″ fits a closet; a 22-lb bike that folds to 35″×35″×15″ doesn’t. Measure your storage space first.
Wheel size trade-off. 14″–16″ wheels fold smaller but ride poorly on uneven surfaces. 20″ wheels are the modern compromise — fold reasonably small, roll over potholes acceptably. 26″ “folding” bikes are really just bikes with a frame hinge.
Fold mechanism quality. Magnesium hinges and quick-release clamps outperform cheap stamped-steel hinges, which develop play over time.
