Cruiser

Cruiser bikes prioritize upright comfort, simple drivetrains (single-speed or 3–7 speed internal hub), and style. They’re built for flat-terrain casual riding — boardwalks, neighborhood loops, short flat commutes — not hills or distance.
Two mechanical choices define the category:

Coaster brake vs. hand brakes. Coaster brakes engage by pedaling backward — simpler maintenance, no exposed cables. Hand brakes give more stopping control but add cable maintenance. Coasters fail at low speeds (no walking-pace control); hand brakes work at all speeds.
Steel vs. aluminum frame. Steel cruisers ride softer (more vibration absorption), aluminum cruisers weigh 3–5 lbs less. Heavier steel frames are actually preferred for the classic cruiser feel.

Most cruisers come in 24″ or 26″ wheel sizes; 26″ is standard for adult riders. Internal-gear hubs (Shimano Nexus 3 or 7) are the comfort upgrade most worth paying for.
